Today marks one year since Camden’s SYNGAP1 diagnosis—a year that has redefined our family in countless ways. As we reflect on the challenges, triumphs, and everything in between, we wanted to write a letter to Camden. It’s our way of capturing this moment in time, sharing with him how proud we are, and putting into words our hopes, dreams, fears, and, most importantly, our unwavering promise to stand by him. This letter is for Camden, a testament to his incredible spirit and the journey we’ve embarked on together.
To Camden,
This past year has been a journey like no other. From the moment we received your SYNGAP1 diagnosis, our lives changed in ways we never expected. At the time, it was hard to grasp the weight of those words or what they would mean for your future—and for ours. This past year has brought challenge, heartbreak, hope, and joy in equal measure. And yet, through it all, you have shown us what true resilience looks like.
Over these months, we’ve fought hard for you. We’ve pored over research, waited on long lists, and pushed for therapies not just so you could get by, but so you could truly thrive. Sometimes it felt like progress came in inches instead of miles. But you reminded us that even inches matter. Every small step forward was a step toward something bigger.
And Camden, you’ve grown in the most incredible ways.
With the help of your amazing therapists, your loving nannies, and our supportive family, we’ve watched you become more confident, more curious, and more willing to try new things. You’re learning to express yourself in ways we once worried might never come, using sign language, your talker, your hands, and your voice. And every time you try, every time you reach out to share your world with us, it’s a moment we treasure.
You’ve taught us something important: milestones don’t define you. It’s the little moment like the quiet victories, the brave attempts, the joyful discoveries that show us just how strong and special you are. And as you continue to find your voice and share your spirit with the world, we couldn’t be prouder. Watching your personality shine through has been one of the greatest joys of our lives.
But we won’t pretend we don’t carry fears.
We worry about the future, not because of who you are but because of what the world may or may not be ready to offer you. We worry about the unknowns: the challenges you might face, the times when we feel helpless, and the moments when you’ll need support we can’t always provide. We worry about a system that doesn’t always understand or accommodate—one that can be slow to support but quick to judge. And most of all, we worry about what happens when we’re no longer here to stand by your side.
Still, here’s what we promise you:
We will never stop fighting for you. Not for a single day.
We will challenge broken systems, stand up to power, and open doors that were never built with you in mind. We will speak when your voice isn’t heard, and step aside when yours shines brighter. We will keep learning, keep trying, and keep loving you with everything we are. Even on the hard days, and especially on the hard days, we will remember your smile, your laugh, your spark, and we will begin again.
We are here for you, Camden, every single step of the way. We will stand by you, fight for you, and champion your needs, no matter the obstacles. Our love for you is boundless, and our commitment to giving you the best possible life is unwavering. We promise to be your advocates, your biggest cheerleaders, and your safe haven.
We hope you grow up knowing that you were never the one who needed to change—the world did. And we will spend our lives helping it do just that.
There is so much we want for you. We want joy to come easily. We want your days to be full of discovery, adventure, and connection. We want you to feel safe in this world, not only protected but truly seen and valued for exactly who you are. We want you to experience belonging, not because you’ve conformed to someone else’s expectations, but because the world has stretched to make space for your magic.
Looking ahead, we’re filled with hope. New therapies are on the horizon, and every day brings us closer to breakthroughs that could change your life. And through it all, we are lifted by a community that understands and supports us, including friends, family, and fellow SYNGAP1 families who have become our lifeline. Their encouragement makes this journey less daunting and infinitely more hopeful.
Camden, you are our beacon of light. You’ve brought so much meaning into our lives, and we are endlessly proud of you. Whatever the future holds, we will face it together—with hope, with courage, and with all the love in our hearts.
Love always,
Mom and Dad
